Izumiya
いづみや
A Japanese confectioner in Tabata, Kita Ward, Tokyo, Izumiya crafts tender daifuku, dango skewers, and seasonal wagashi that change by the month.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Along a corner of the Tabata Ginza shopping street, Izumiya presents a showcase filled with unpretentious rice cakes and skewered dango designed for everyday snacking. Tender, pillowy mochi is the hallmark here. The mame daifuku is generously studded with whole beans and can be ordered with either smooth koshian or textured tsubuan red bean paste. Toward the early spring, strawberry daifuku paired with mellow white bean paste joins the lineup, alongside glazed mitarashi dango, anko skewers, and other fruit-filled mochi confections that fit comfortably into daily neighborhood life.
Beyond its staple dango and steamed manju buns, the shop crafts jo-namagashi that shift with the calendar. Each month brings around 4 to 5 varieties of these delicate, sculpted confections, capturing natural motifs and seasonal vignettes at approachable prices. The counter also welcomes traditional touchstones as the weeks turn: sakura mochi and mugwort kusa mochi in spring, oak-leaf kashiwa mochi in early summer, and chilled mizuyokan or lotus root renkon mochi through the warmer months.
Savory bites occasionally round out the selection, including red bean sekihan, agemaki bento boxes, inarizushi, and kanpyo gourd rolls. Because popular items often sell out by late afternoon, visiting during the morning offers the widest choice. Payment is accepted in cash as well as through QR code services such as PayPay and Rakuten Pay.
